Tower of the Shoemakers

A few words about Tower of the Shoemakers, Sighisoara
The Cizmarilors’ Tower in Sighisoara is an impressive fortification located in the northern part of the fortress. Originally built in the 14th century, the tower has undergone multiple reconstructions, the last time being remodelled in 1681 in Baroque style. Over time, it played a crucial defensive role for the fortress, also housing a considerable amount of gunpowder, which increased its strategic importance.
The Tower of the Shoemakers is unique because of its pentagonal plan and its baroque cap-shaped roof, with two observation turrets. It was originally in the care of the shoemakers’ guild, who were responsible not only for making the shoes, but also for maintaining and defending this section of the fortress fortification. Today, the tower continues its tradition of serving the local community by housing the local radio station.
Restorations and modifications over the centuries reflect adaptations to the military techniques of the time and the needs of the community. For example, changes in 1681 included significant structural modifications that improved the tower’s defensive capacity, and the introduction of the wooden exterior staircase in 2001 added a modern element, making it easier for visitors to access and maintain.
Thus, the Cizmarilors’ Tower remains not only an essential part of Sighisoara’s historical and architectural heritage, but also a vibrant example of how historical structures can be adapted to serve contemporary needs. It continues to be a tourist attraction, providing a window into the town’s medieval past.
