Butchers Tower

A few words about Butchers Tower, Sighisoara

The Butchers’ Tower in Sighisoara, also known as the Tower of the Butchers, is one of the outstanding medieval defensive structures of the town. This tower was built in the second half of the 15th century and is located on the western side of the surrounding wall of the fortress, forming part of the fortifications protecting the city.
The architecture of the tower is adapted to its defensive function, having a hexagonal plan that allowed better coverage of the battlefield in case of siege. The Butchers’ Tower was originally the responsibility of the butchers’ guild, who were charged not only with supplying the town with meat, but also with defending this important part of the fortifications.
Over the centuries, the tower has undergone various modifications and restorations, reflecting changes in military technique and the needs of the community. A bastion was later built in front of the tower, strengthening the defensive capacity of the area.
Today, the Butchers’ Tower is a major tourist attraction in Sighisoara, offering visitors an insight into military history and daily life in a medieval fortress. It is not only a historical monument, but also a symbol of the cultural heritage of the city, being one of the best preserved towers in the fortifications of Sighisoara.
