The School of the Hill in Sighisoara, also known as “Josef Haltrich” High School, is one of the oldest educational institutions in Transylvania and is classified as a historical monument. It was originally built in 1522 and has undergone various structural changes over time, each stage adding to its historical and architectural value.
The school has been an important centre for the education of young people in the region, adapting to educational needs by introducing new courses and modern administrative structures over the centuries. It was connected to the town by a covered staircase built in 1642, also known as the “Schoolboys’ Staircase”, which facilitated access to the institution for students.
The Hill School played a crucial role in the local community, with an impressive collection of herbal and other teaching materials, reflecting its commitment to scientific and cultural education. It has become a symbol of Sighisoara’s dedication to teaching and preserving cultural heritage.
