Church on the hill

A few words about Church on the hill, Sighisoara

The Church on the Hill in Sighisoara, also known as the Church of Saint Nicholas, is a remarkable architectural monument located on the School Hill. Construction of this church began in 1345 and was completed in 1525. It is dedicated to Saint Nicholas and is one of the most important Gothic churches in Transylvania, being the third largest in the region.
Throughout its history, the church has been a vital centre for the local community, playing a crucial role in education due to its proximity to the school on the hill. Originally built for the Catholic community, the church switched to Lutheranism in 1544, which resulted in its original frescoes being covered over. They were partially unveiled during renovations in 1934 and more completely between 1992 and 2003.
The church is notable for its Gothic architecture and decorative elements, including 15th-century frescoes and tabernacle. The church is also home to numerous historic tombstones and an impressive Gothic altar.
